Aerodrome Turn 1958
Proctor I G-AHNA after having suffered a bird strike on the final leg to the airfield 18th June 1954. It was a very large Crow that lifted off when we were about 50 ft above a large oak tree about 2 miles from the airfield. Its body hit the No 1 cylinder, and one wing nearly filled the length of the engine cooling duct! It was very, very lucky that it did not hit the propeller or the windscreen.
Even then we came in 7th! Repairs were made in the Baginton Hangars where my father worked, to the nose cowl seen here and to the non standard undershield (the standard exhaust had been changed for 'stub' exhausts) which was also damaged.
After the reapirs we were able to take part in the next days Kings Cup Air Race, where we achieved 8th place.
This event was recorded by Chris Wren in Flight magazine, of whom I requested, and received the copy above.
G-AHNA Proctor 1 Known as 'Happy Nannie Ann' by my sister when aged 5 - it was her version of the old phonetic alphabet of 'How Nan Able'! Nannie Ann was then added to the nose flash.
