Recommended enthusiasts sites-
http://www.thunder-and-lightnings.co.uk/   Superb coverage of postwar aircraft concentrating on aircraft types that exist in air museums, but the site goes much further giving details of many more examples of each aircraft, the eventual aim is to get as many photographs as possible of each type covered.

Airbus A400M The freighter of the future.
The new A400M Airlifter is out today. The A400M is the next generation of military transport aircraft. It is being built by Airbus and is scheduled to fly in 2008. It will be used by the Royal Air Force, as well as the French, German, Spanish and South African military. This simulation of the A400M has been developed by Wilco and will give flight sim enthusiasts the chance to fly the transport of tomorrow.
The superb software is a credit to Justflight.

Just how low can you get ?!
With thanks to Uncle Roger at 'Flight' magazine.

The wonderful SBS-2.
Some 25 years ago the enthiast was offered the first airband radios to appear on the market,I never go anywhere without mine and it has been a source of enjoyment for many years, then I got wind of a virtual aircraft tracking system,I just had to get my hands on one,now I can not only listen to those specks in the sky but track them on my virtual radar system, follow them and watch as the climb out and set course for warmer climes, this system has already taught me a lot about our air traffic control system and is pioneering a system of collision avoidance and monitoring that is here to stay.
Well how does it work ? basically a Transponder unit is installed in the aircraft,at the moment every day more aircraft are being fitted with them, and the CAA want a unit fitted into every General Aviation ircraft by the year 2008,this includes microlights, balloons, gliders in fact anything that uses the sky to make it a much safer place.
The ideas of the use of transponders has been around for a very long time,Michael Bentine who lost his son in a tragic Piper Cub accident whereby the aircraft fell into heavy undergrowth and was not found for weeks wanted two things, one for every pilot to file a flight plan, and two for aircraft to be equipped with transponder units,if the aircraft had been so equipped then he would have been located very quickly and no doubt survived, the massive increase in air traffic within the UK alone means that a system like this is essential, the extra expense of purchasing units for say £1,000 far outweighs the benefits in safety, even compact portable units are available for use in microlights.
The aircraft sends out a code which is installed into the box, this is known as the HEX code, meaning eight figures, every aircraft on the British Civil register and throughout the world now has such a code allocated in readiness for the transponder revolution that is taking place, here are some screen grabs of my system taken at a light period in order to see the basic screen set up,the picture below this one shows the constantly upgraded and updated streaming aircraft data picked up by the antennae and fed into the box.
The runway orientation for both Coventry and Birmingham airports added today.
Tracked aircraft showing the beacon at Honiley airfield, altitude, speed, real time positions,HEX 8 digit codes which can be de-coded,a useful physical check can be carried out by using Google Earth, the operators latitude/Lonitude is fed into the software, various display parameters can be set up.
At peak times there can be as many as 50-60 aircraft in the area shown where I monitor from, the whole system has proved to be a fascinating insight into what is going on up there and proved to be totally absorbing.
I am curently experimenting with different antennae combinations/designs from a biscuit tin lid ground plane mounted 18 inches from a 20 foot pole with the antennae mounted into as much free sky as possible to the supplied magnetic mount fitted to a domestic tea tray !

How to move thousands of books, tools and models.
First you get hold of as many boxes as you possibly can from local supermarkets,if it just happens to be before Christmas as in my case then the wine department will be your favourite port of call, soon you will begin to appreciate those stout whisky boxes and appreciate its drinkers !
Next the long and boring job of packing your chattels safely, rolls of bubble wrap, tape and hours of work ahead, this lot took 30 days so far that included dismantling five sheds into flat packs, the load will take two specialist removal company runs estimated at a 4 hour upload, and a three hour download time with three men and a 7 and a half ton articulated lorry, estimated time out of my life is one and a half years, will I ever find anything again ? well not in the immediate future and the unwrapping will take 24 times that of the packing,a sobering thought ? hardly.
Boxes
Curver type boxes
Every little bit of space filled with boxes
Materials have to be bundled together
Awkward sized items need sorting
Another room with boxes
Looking through a stark lounge at more boxes
A box is a box, whatever its shape and size
What was the entrance to my library now jammed with moving items
What was my workroom, packing those small fragile models is a real headache
One shed has been loosened off all ready for moving, but the contents need moving first, you have to plan, and then re-plan
Looking from the back of my old workroom towards the door
Tools need attention as well, really heavy stuff to pack, old shop drawers come in handy here
Thousands of files all ready to go
Dismantling sheds is time consuming, and hard work, you must label everything and order new screws for the re-assembly process
Christmas items all ready to go,not that we used any this year
Those old large kit boxes have been put to good use

8th February 2007 more snow than we have had for years.
